What is the most popular style of guitar people want to learn after they cover the basics? The Blues
Elements of blues guitar can be found in almost all forms of guitar driven music and the raw energetic feel of the blues
Private blues guitar lessons can cost you $20 or $30 bucks a week. That’s a lot of money, and combined with the time commitment to attend that lesson the same night and time each week can really turn people off the idea of private instruction.
First off there’s no time restrictions. You learn when it’s convenient for you also as quickly or as slowly as you’d like. Secondly, it’s a heck of a lot cheaper. If you can buy a few months of worth of blues guitar lessons on dvd for less then $100 who wants to pay $120 or $150 bucks for just a months worth of private lessons? Not me!
Below are the two best blues guitar dvd courses available online. While both of these courses are great I feel they each serve a particular audience. Take a look at both of these and my points on them and then make the best decision for the type of player your are currently and the type of player you hope to become.
From the Award winning creators of Learn and Master Guitar comes the Learn and Master Blues Guitar Spotlight DVD course. This is my personal favorite, but I am biased since I went through this course myself and really enjoyed it.
I feel this blues guitar DVD is authentic to the blues style of guitar player and not the newer rock/blues style.
You can expect to learn basic concepts like: 12 bar blues, 7th chords and Pentatonic blues scales
As well as more advanced topics like: blues phrasing, creating your own licks and more
Steve Krenz (click here to read his bio) is the instructor for the course. He was also the instructor for Learn and Master Guitar. He’s proven to be a fantastic video based instructor who is capable of making a dvd video lesson feel almost like a one-on-one private lesson in your home.
Learn and Master Blues includes a Jam along DVD and CD with 22 tracks you can play along with and practice your new skills. With blues more then ever it’s important to utilize these Jam discs to really develop your own style. Just learning the scales isn’t enough with the blues you want to learn how to use the notes and create new and unique sound riffs and licks.

For those hard core blues lovers there are also two exclusive interviews included with Jack Pearson, gutiar player with Allman Brothers Band, Delbert McClinton, Faith Hill, Jimmy Buffett, as well as Johnny Hiland who’s played with Ricky Skaggs, Toby Keith, Hank Williams III, Sammy Hagar, Steve Vai.

In these interviews these great blues guitarists discuss topics about gear, performing and advanced blues tips not covered in the lesson DVDS. They’re a great bonus to the course.
I feel Learn & Master Blues Spotlight is best suited for beginner and intermediate players who want a well rounded education on blues guitar and not just how to play solos and licks. Also those who are most interested in authentic blues styles and not just rock N roll blues.

This is a newer course by Rail Road Media Inc. A company well known for their drum lesson courses but have been branching out into other instruments including the piano (piano system) and guitar (beginner guitar system) over the past year.
The Blues Guitar Blueprint is dubbed more of a “learn to play great lead” course. If you have a bit of knowledge on 12 bar blues and scales this course will most likely interest you.
The goal of the 2 lesson DVDs is to teach you to break free from the same old blue scales and learn to create your own style and feel on the guitar.
There are Jam Along tracks included in 7 different keys for you to use and practice with along with a spiral bound work book that reviews the material taught in each lesson.
The video quality is top notch and each lesson uses split screen technology to show you a full shot of the instructor, Nate Savage, play as well as a close up of the strumming and fretting hands.
Over all I feel this course is best suited for younger guitar players who are interested in the Rock N Roll blues style and want to play lead guitar.
