Thanks to the Internet and inexpensive video recording equipment there are now all kinds of options for beginner blues guitar players. There are online blues guitar lessons and blues guitar dvds from some of the top instructors in the industry just a click away.
All beginning blues guitar players should start by learning the 12 bar blues form. If you’re not very familiar with scales and the basics of musical theory and steps between notes then I’d suggest you either enrol for some online lessons or purchase a blues guitar dvd course (I’ll make some suggestions at the end of this article)
Once you learn the 12 bar forms and practice them in several different keys you can start adding some bluesy sounds to the mix. The easiest way to do that is to learn 7th chords. These chords give a nice blues sound to your progressions and offer a lot more variety of how you can them.
As a beginner blues guitarist it’s important that you have some background on the guitar. You should know your open chords, some bar chords, the names of each string and have a little bit of theory knowledge. If you’ve never held a guitar before then starting right out of the gate with beginning blues guitar lessons might be difficult for you
I have used two different beginner blues guitar courses this past year. The first was online blues guitar lessons from JamPlay.com a website offering online guitar lessons videos from 6 different blues guitar instructors. I enjoyed the lesson content but I am an intermediate player already so I picked everything up quickly.
More recently I’ve been using a blues guitar dvd from Legacy Learning Systems, Learn & Master Blues Spotlight. This course, while moves a little slower for me, offers better quality instruction for beginners and covers a ton of topics across the 6 dvds included.
If you’re a beginner then I would urge you to get a copy of the Learn and Master Blues Spotlight course. It’s top notch beginning blues guitar instruction for a fraction of the price of private lessons.
